English builders in France

Straight answer first: this page is not a directory, and we are not going to sell you one. What it does is take the company on your quote and put it through three French state registers, in English, so you know who you are about to pay before the money moves.

Why there is no list here

Search for English builders in France and most of what comes back is a directory that earns its money by passing your details on. That is a business we deliberately stay out of, so we cannot honestly compete on the same page. The useful half of that search is the part after you have a name, and that half is barely served in English at all.

One thing worth knowing before you start looking: French paperwork is French whoever you hire. The quote, the insurance certificate and the handover document arrive in French, and the language of the site conversation does not change that.

Check the company on your quote

Type the name exactly as it appears on the quote, or better, the SIREN number printed on it. The check runs against the state company register, the official insolvency gazette and the energy certification file, and it happens in your browser: nothing is stored and nothing is passed on.

What a clean result does not prove

  • A company can be perfectly registered and still do bad work. The registers are about paperwork, not craft.
  • A young company is not a red flag. Experienced tradespeople start new ones; ask where the earlier jobs sit.
  • The ten-year insurance is the one thing no register holds, and it is the one that matters most if something structural goes wrong years later. Ask for the certificate and read which activity it covers.

Already have a devis?

Upload it and get a line-by-line reading in English, compared against the same French ranges as the cost page. The quote is read once, never stored, and the verdict is about the paperwork, not about the tradesperson.

Go deeper: the AI quote check

Upload the quote itself (PDF or a photo of the pages) and get a line-by-line verdict against the same validated ranges as the calculator: fair, ask, or warning, plus what is missing, the provisional sums, and the payment terms. Your quote is processed once, never stored and never used to train anything.

Checking your credit…

When you have the quote in front of you, two other questions decide what it really costs: which VAT rate applies and whether the work needs permission.

Frequently asked questions

Do you have a list of English-speaking builders in France?

No, and we are not going to build one. This site does not sell leads and does not take a commission for passing your details on, which is exactly what a directory of that kind runs on. What we can do is check a company you already have a quote from, against the French state registers, in English.

Does a builder have to speak English?

No, and the paperwork will be French whatever language the conversation is in. The quote, the ten-year insurance certificate and the final handover document are French documents; that is worth planning for rather than hoping around.

What is the one thing I should insist on?

The ten-year insurance certificate, the assurance décennale. No public register can confirm it, because it is a contract between the company and its insurer, so the certificate itself is the only proof. French insurance law requires it to be attached to quotes and invoices.
