Notes from behind the numbers

Occasional pieces on where the figures on this site come from, what moved in the published sources, and what the data behind a price can and cannot support.

Why every honest UK renovation price is a range

One guide prints four different day rates for the same trade on its own website. Three air conditioning guides overlap in a band far narrower than any of them advertises. Put the published figures side by side and the same lesson keeps appearing: a single number always lies about something.

Day rate or fixed price?

Two builders on the same day rate can take a very different number of days over the same job. That is the whole problem with buying labour by the day, and it makes the choice of model worth more than any rate you negotiate.

Why these exist

The cost pages on this site answer one question each and stay out of the way. These pieces are for the questions underneath them: where a published figure comes from, what moved in the rules, and what the data behind a price can honestly support. Every figure in them is pulled from the same source files the cost pages use, so an article cannot quietly drift away from the guide it belongs to.

How prices and sources are handled across the site is set out in how we price.
